What makes Jesus different than other gods?
Well, the concept of a divine logos, a divine word, would have been common in the early centuries. In fact, Leland Ryken points out that John “imitated the language of familiar pagan writing in his prologue” when he wrote in John 1, “In the beginning was the word, and the word was with God, and the word was God.”
The surprise is when you get to verse 14. That divine logos, that divine word, verse 14 says, “became flesh and dwelt among us.”
You weren’t left with the impossible task of working your way up to God. Jesus came down to you.
He didn’t stay at a distance. He lived on earth. He didn’t store up his wealth. He let it all go. He didn’t sit on the throne. He laid in a manger.
To put it simply, the difference between Jesus and other gods … is Christmas.
